Kreatives Kochen mit Cooks of Grind

Saturday, June 2 2018 | 10.00 Uhr - 16.00 Uhr

Zum kreativen Kochen laden die Cooks of Grind am 2. Juni im Bildungshaus St. Martin anlässlich des 90-jährigen Jubiläums des St. Martiner Kochbuches

02. Juni 2018 | 10.00 – 16.00 Uhr
Bildungshaus St. Martin | Kehlbergstraße 35, 8054  Graz
Treffpunkt: Schlosshof

The innovative eyewear collection VIU Archetypes Collection is made of polyamide dust. Each model is customized for the client. On the basis of product images and the presentation of materials and prototypes, visitors to Designmonat Graz will be able to closely follow the individual work steps from the idea to the finished eyewear.

For the two owners Stefan Kalch and Gerhard Fuchs the cornerstones of the exclusive product selection are quality and sustainability, identification and a story. The Graz-based motorcycle workshop Titan Motorcycles, which is run by Tom Possod and Michael Siebenhofer, perfectly matches their attitude: At Titan Motorcycles they rebuild old motorcycles which then leave the shop with a new design and a new personality. One of the models will be displayed at Sun/Set/Star during Designmonat Graz: the model Titan One which is based on a small Honda.

Manuel Essl Design is an Austrian fashion label of fashion designer Manuel Essl. In his work the Styrian attaches particular importance to details and combines high fashion and streetwear with unique patterns, art and music. In 2017, Essl opened his fashion store at Muenzgrabenstrasse, which, during Designmonat Graz, will be the setting for an event in cooperation with female students of HLW Schroedinger.

On June 1, the store presents the latest collection of the designer, “LOOK INTO SPACE”, on two levels: In the studio atelier, they illustrate the evolution of the collection in regards to the program focus “How much tolerance does design need?”. In the breathtaking vault cellar the Graz-based dance crew “Mighty Shakers” stages the collection every half hour. The event is moderated by oe24 radio host Laura Rauch and accompanied by DJ Chris Kent.

BRANDED – studio for visual communication
Mandellstraße 8, 8010 Graz

Already years ago the Graz-based agency BRANDED decided to become active in the name of communication and to dedicate themselves to the crux of the matter in their work. Within Designmonat Graz they examine the question of how tolerant design actually is.

Designers prefer to be among themselves. Still, how far do they include the public – the people who see, use and ultimately have to tolerate creations on a daily basis – when they process a design? How tolerant are designers when it comes to receiving an early feedback in the design process from someone who cannot differentiate between serif and sans-serif, but considers Comic Sans a “funny” font?

The experiment Co Create invites designers via social media, posters and word of mouth to upload any kinds of designs to a platform created especially for Designmonat Graz. These can include various logo or corporate design drafts, but also different materials or shapes for products, various cuts or patterns and much more. The only thing that matters is that there are different, alternative designs for the same idea, for solving the same problem whose acceptance or tolerance is to be evaluated.

In the course of Designmonat Graz, BRANDED collects all designs and makes them available to a broad public on their platform in order to evaluate them. On June 1, the participating designers and interested persons will be invited to the presentation and discussion of the designs at the BRANDED office at Mandellstrasse in Graz.

Enjoyment is a kind of art

The specialty shop Il Nascondiglio, Italian for “the hiding place”, brings a piece of Italy to Graz. Owner Irene Ofenheimer-Kober regularly visits the region around Lake Garda to personally select delicacies such as olive oil, quince jelly, jams and organic wine and provide them in her shop. Within Designmonat Graz, the southern ambience of the “hiding place” is complemented by a harmonizing painting of artist Elisabeth Pfniss. The painting can be seen on the back wall of the shop and, like all of the artist’s works, is dominated by intuitively chosen colors and an abstract aesthetic. In tune with the lovingly designed interior of Il Nascondiglio, the work transfers its viewers even more intensively into the Italian “region of pleasure”.

We Are Here Now!

We question our role as designers
We are eager to solve problems
We let go of the logical path
We embrace differences
We observe our surroundings
We offer new perspectives
We are Dutch
We try
We do
We make
We are here, now!

The exhibition ‘We Are Here, Now‘ showcases work by Dutch designers who represent a new generation of emerging designers; a generation that is motivated by the impact of their work on the world. The works presented in this exhibition are not the all-encompassing answers, but part of a larger and more sustainable way of thinking about the world that—if embraced by the whole of society—would help us move forward. So let’s start here and now!

In this exhibition, we question ourselves as designers, producers, thinkers, doers and as world citizens—where do we want to be and how do we get there?

As designers we are eager to solve problems. We are aware of what surrounds us and strive to push the boundaries that will bring us closer to a world of our own making. To achieve this goal we must sometimes let go of the logical path in order to clear the way for new perspectives. The solutions we create are informed by the observation of our surroundings, the people we work with, and an understanding of the resources we design for. We are Dutch designers and look at the world from a down-to-earth perspective. We respect, but also rethink and reimagine what is already here. We embrace the differences that bring us together, offering beauty in the uncommon and unexpected.
To build our world we search, we try, we do, we make.
We are here, now. Join us!

„eins“

Designer Raimund Gamerith regularly exhibits new objects in his studio, such as tables and armchairs, beds and cabinets, which he manufactures from local woods in the workshop attached to the studio. During Designmonat Graz he presents his latest product: the bench “eins”. The natural shape of the bench is not coincidental but it is made of one piece of wood. The designer exclusively uses expressive local wood. The different lengths and grains of the wood pieces as well as the different types of wood (nut, oak, ash, pear, apple, etc.) result in exciting wood paintings – thus nature becomes an inspirational design partner.

For more than 5 years there is the association DruckZeug, which runs the old printing house of Alexander Bauer at Annenstrasse and revives the knowledge of the old setters, printers and bookbinders. For 5 years there have been workshops, open workshops, school classes visiting, guided tours and museum days. Within these years, the people running the place have met many interesting people, made friends, brewed and implemented new ideas

With this celebration, the DruckZeug team would like to thank all visitors, supporters and volunteers without whom this wonderful place would not exist.

To mark the occasion, they designed a special edition of a Graz postcard, and wrote a book about DruckZeug, which will be presented this evening. There will also be a retrospective of selected prints of the last 5 years.

The secret of the floating objects is a strong magnetic field that Morris skillfully plays with. 13.30: Impulse lecture on the working process
Stefanie Hödlmoser Design Studio | Puchstraße 17-21, Atelier 10, 8010 Graz

Within Designmonat Graz, designer Stefanie Hoedlmoser presents design objects, which she makes from Corian waste. Due to its thermoformability and seamless adhesion, the versatile sheet material is used for large outdoor objects and shop fitting. But the material cannot be recycled well. So, Corian-processing companies produce sections and leftovers that directly go to the dump.

“Almost Gone” is a series of experiments and objects by the Graz-based designer, aiming at giving a purpose to some of the “garbage” of Corian-processing companies.

The origin of her work was a Choch3 cooperation project in 2017, in which – together with designer Stephan Wiesenhofer – she designed three product prototypes made of Corian waste. Yet, the project left a huge amount of material that was not used. Stefanie Hoedlmoser decided to continue the experiments: The resulting prototypes were further developed and Hoedlmoser designed more objects, which will be presented in her studio on May 16.

Stefanie Hoedlmoser operates as a freelance designer and artist in Graz. Since 2015 she has been working in a studio of the City of Graz at the former Tagger area.
The area has been changing and provides a good ground for many young and / or creative companies who settle on site and engage in networking.

Tolerance, Design & Good Taste – a subjective hearing

Die Agentur cardamom lädt zu einem Gespräch über folgende Aspekte und Gedanken nach Weiz ein:

The agency cardamom invites you to Weiz to discuss about the following issues and thoughts:

– What role does tolerance play within the creative industries? Are we tolerant ourselves? Do we expect our customers to be tolerant? Due to our profession, what do we understand by tolerance?

– Many areas of our life are characterized by change and upheavals. One of them implies the people in need who came to our country and need our society to get back on their feet. Which role can we play considering the tools of the creative industries? How can we, being a communicative, versatile and digital community, contribute to this?

– What does that mean in terms of interaction? The private – the professional – the social policy. What kind of taboos are there that we need to point out?

The following people will take part in the discussion:
Andreas Rath | Woche Weiz
Christian Heuegger-Zirm | cardamom
Eva Kollmann | Creative Industries Styria
Heinz Schwindhackl | Konditorei Schwindhackl

The line MUT by designer Johanna Hauck is inspired by her work as a Feldenkrais teacher. The Feldenkrais method is an exercise therapy that helps to better integrate the connection between body and mind.

In the course of a presentation at Omas Teekanne, the designer explains how MUT can influence the positive impact of our self-image and our body awareness through exercise and clothing.

This includes both the shape and the relationship of the body parts to each other as well as spatial and temporal references and kinesthetic sensations, feelings and thoughts. All components are deeply interwoven and form an inseparable whole. MUT by JH is fashion that comes to life through movement and adapts to the body. Perfect cuts and high-quality materials in the best organic quality guarantee a holistic feel-good factor.

Since 2014 Johanna Hauck has been running the eponymous regional organic fashion label in Graz. With the label, the designer has committed herself to the finest “organic fashion”, far from any clichés. In the course of Designmonat Graz, the Industrial Design degree program at FH JOANNEUM invites you to Design Talk 2018 at Joanneumsviertel. Based on the topic “The cycle of economy. Is design part of the solution or part of the problem?” Michael Braungart gives a lecture, which will be followed by a panel discussion. The event takes place in cooperation with Creative Industries Styria.

Which questions are addressed?
– How does design influence our lives, and do wrong design solutions not lead us to one-way streets?
– Today, design often aims at increasing corporate profits – at the expense of our natural and social environment. Natural resources and people are frequently exploited. Originally, design aimed at solving problems and improving the quality of life. How can we once more approach this objective and what can the Cradle-to-Cradle concept, which aims at closing natural and technical product and material cycles, hence achieve?

The Age of Branded Protest
In an era where social media have become the drawing board, for social justice, lies the birth of a branded message. With thoughtful organization and visual display, it can quickly be recognized by big corporate media, reaching worldwide audiences in little time. Today’s protests are more visible. Hashtags can be developed weeks or even days in advance, and have the potential of becoming popular slogans for protest. Social media’s ability to consolidate protests is incredible, not merely for those who like to know what they should write on a cardboard sign or need to wear, but also for those who use these slogans to deliver messages to their local representatives.

Exploring areas of concern that cause individuals to be effected deeply.
What is the cause, and why are we protesting, what are the goals?
Organize and create a social platform to mobile people with common concern and interest.
Find iconic messages and unique creative ideas to brand the protest, for the best possible visibility and wide reach attention.

Klaus Kempenaars
Klaus Kempenaars is one of the founders of xSITE, an international design organization with collaborators in New York, Amsterdam and Bangalore. The company explores new ways of visual communication through its work in branding, corporate identity, advertising and design. With a focal point in social awareness, clients include Calvin Klein, Knoll, Sony, JP Morgan Chase, Target, Amway, Adidas, MTV, The Metropolitan Opera, Rijksmuseum, and Swatch.

Several prestigious awards for the work include the AIGA 365, Art Directors Club, The Type Directors Club, The 100 Club – The American Center of Design and the I.D. Magazine Gold Medal to name a few. Work has been shown in design exhibitions around the globe.

Design and Protest
This year’s lecture series of the FH JOANNEUM Institute for Design and Communication will bring speakers from Tel Aviv, Detroit, New York and Porto to Graz to present and discuss various aspects of these trends by using concrete examples.

For more than a hundred years, creative professionals have been visualizing ideas, promoting commitment in social and political issues, and thus participating in shaping the world. Even today, many designers are no longer satisfied with just serving well-heeled clients in their search for aesthetic differentiation, but increasingly question their role as designers in the context of the increasing gap between rich and poor. They engage in social movements, support grassroots initiatives and try to make a simple and calm contribution to improving the world and for a solidary society.

Design & Protest in Detroit: Tracing Scars and Healing Space

This presentation examines the tension between protest and design through the lens of a place-making project in the heavily industrialized region of Southwest Detroit. This project seeks to honor the legacy of the 1932 Hunger March, a seminal but nearly forgotten event in the city’s labor history, while also pointing towards a more just and sustainable future. This example will be discussed in the context of enduring and emerging questions around issues of segregation, environmental racism, gentrification and equity in the city’s latest phase of redevelopment.

Paul Draus
Paul Draus is a sociologist and ethnographic researcher in the Department of Behavioral Sciences at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. From 1992 until 2000, Draus was a public health field worker, specializing in tuberculosis control, first in New York City and then in Chicago. He earned his PhD from Loyola University Chicago in 2001, and he is the author of Consumed in the City: Observing Tuberculosis at Century’s End (Temple University Press, 2004), which was based on his dissertation research. He has published extensively on health behaviors and social contexts related to substance abuse in both rural and urban areas. His most recent research focuses on the relationship between neighborhood landscape change and marginalized populations in Detroit.

After a joint photo walk through the neighborhood with analogue cameras (please bring your own), you retreat to the darkroom and develop your black and white film. Then, upon request, the participants can also develop positives. Of course you may also take pictures at the premise of DruckZeug. Only black and white films are used, which are manufactured by DruckZeug. Sharpness, contrast and composition do of course lie in the eye of the beholder.

Steiermaerkische Sparkasse | Foyer | Am Sparkassenplatz 4, 8010 Graz

The exhibition “Series of Tolerance” shows the results of a project implemented by Ortweinschule Graz.

The project was organized by Robert Eisenberger of the Graz-based interior design studio INSIDE, and teachers of Ortweinschule. The interior design studio sponsored 13 copies of the design classic “Chair model 3107” by Fritz Hansen for the 3rd year of the division interior design, space and object design.

The chair served as a basic body but apart from that there were no limits in terms of design, shape and surface. The given topic is freely and associatively related to this year’s focus of Designmonat, tolerance. The resulting pieces are characterized by inventiveness and originality and show the students’ sensitive approach to the topic.

After the exhibition, the chairs will be presented at INSIDE Einrichtungen and can be purchased. The net proceeds will be donated to a charity project.

The idea originated in the course of the 60th anniversary of Danish designer Arne Jacobsen, whose most famous piece, besides “Egg ™”, “Drop ™” and “Swan™” , is the chair “Series 7”.

As part of this, INSIDE Einrichtungen displays a limited edition of the classics, which this year are presented in a unique design to honor Arne Jacobsen: a combination of natural, undyed leather with all its grains and folds reflecting natural life, and classy gilded chair frames – perfect pieces for collectors and lovers of Danish design!

“Ein Übergangsritual: Von der Anthropologie zum Design”
Today’s design, as it is taught, is made by and for people. We talk a lot about UX design, usability, user-centered design, and social design, and yet such approaches are still extremely rare. The creative environment is still dominated by great egos.

This personal lecture is about Michael Leube’s career from being an anthropologist and a development worker to becoming a designer. He tells of the frustration with the flood of meaningless products, artificial needs and the unsustainable use of resources. Leube wishes to arouse the so often apathetic students and generally wake people up to discover the enormous potential of the designer as a problem solver.

Michael Leube
Originally from Innsbruck, Michael Leube grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area. He received his B.A. degree at the University of California, Berkeley (Anthropology and Comparative Religious Studies, 1994.) He moved back to Europe and received a master degree at the University of Vienna (Anthropology and Human Biology, 1999) and a doctorate degree at the University of Zagreb (Anthropology, 2003).
Leube worked for the Wiener Zeitung as a journalist for environmental protection topics. With a focus on development aid he worked as a scientist in Guatemala (1999), India and Nepal (2000) and Kenya (2001.) From 2000 to 2013 he lived and worked as an anthropologist in Madrid and taught at Universidad Nebrija, Syracuse University, University of California, Santa Clara University and Saint Louis University.
Since 2013 Leube has been conducting research at the interface of anthropology and design at University of Applied Sciences Salzburg. He is convinced that good design must be adapted to the Homo Sapiens and therefore all industrial projects have to refer to the human being. Apart from research, Michael Leube hosts workshops on participatory design, humanitarian design and the anthropology of consumption.

Socially and Politically Driven Design
Dissent is an essential part of keeping democratic societies healthy, and our ability as citizens to voice our opinion is not only our privilege but our responsibility. Without this dialogue, the backbone of what we have fought so desperately for could easily crumble. A picture is worth a thousand words and designers have used this adage to their advantage by creating simple yet powerful designs that immediately convey poignant messages to their viewers.
For censorship and self-censorship, PR, but also for styling, make-up, plastic surgery and fashion you need artists and designers, that understand the power of an image. There are firstly humans / citizens and then designers. Hopefully, one day when they stop being artists / designers they are still going to be humans and not sell their soul in the process.

Mirko Ilić
Mirko Ilić was born in Bosnia. In Europe, he drew comics, illustrations, and art-directed posters, books, and record covers. In the US, he was the art director of Time Magazine International Edition and the Op-Ed pages of The New York Times. In 1995 he founded his graphic design studio Mirko Ilić Corp, specializing in editorial, identities, and hospitality design. His work is in collections of many institutions and museums, such as The Smithsonian Institution, MoMA, and SFMOMA.
Mirko Ilić is the co-author of several books with Steve Heller, including Genius Moves: 100 Icons of Graphic Design, Handwritten, The Anatomy of Design, Stop Think Go Do, Lettering Large, Presenting Shakespeare, and Head to Toe: The Nude in Graphic Design. With Milton Glaser he co-wrote The Design of Dissent. He teaches MFA Illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

Designing for Protest
Being creative gives designers the ability to express their believes in a visual way. Sometimes design is being used to protest for or against something. In a fun lecture, Galit Avinoam describes designed examples for protest. Can we or should we design a protest? Or should we let it grow naturally?
Is design able to help a protest to flourish? Is there a place and is it right to think about aesthetics when it comes to painful topics? Galit Avinoam will share her thoughts about protest camps in Israel and abroad, describe examples for protest, especially environmental protests that she succeeded in.

Galit Pnina Avinoam
Galit Pnina Avinoam graduated at the Holon Institute of Technology (H.I.T) Israel in 1999. Previously she worked as a lecturer at the BVD Design Academy, the Open University, H.I.T Holon, and others. She is specialized in tailoring design to meet the customers’ expectations and is specializing in planning and designing of private and commercial spaces such as retail, clubs, bars, restaurants, offices, halls and hotels. In identifying the uniqueness and special personality in every
project or client, Galit Avinoam has found her true calling. In addition, she professionally writes articles about architecture and design, and, devoted to making her design accessible to the masses, also shares her knowledge in TV shows.

Musical Jewellery

Two blacksmiths who focus on custom-made products joined forces within the project of Hermine Pruegger: goldsmith and silversmith Hermine Pruegger knows how to design pieces of jewelry with multiple functions. She turns the diadem into a necklace or a ring into a pendant. During Designmonat Graz, in her studio, her extravagant unique pieces unite with the hand-made silver microphones of the native Romanian Emil Kindlein. With his unusual microphones, which bear names such as Bottle, Bullet or Spider, the musician, silversmith and artist carries on a long family tradition.

Lounge furniture for the city

How should objects look like to literally “occupy” urban space? What do seating objects need to guarantee maximum coziness with a high quality of stay? In the form of a mutual competition, Creative Industries Styria and Steirischer Holzcluster invited designers and architects to submit their ideas for the “urban lounge furniture” of the future. The basic requirement was that they needed to use the material wood. The five best designs were selected and implemented by Styrian carpentries.

As part of Designmonat Graz, five prototypes that were implemented both by designers and carpenters, are installed as temporary seating objects in different locations of Graz, inviting locals and tourists to extensively try out and enjoy the seating furniture.

Customized Fences by H+S Zauntechnik

In cooperation with Creative Industries Styria, the Styrian company Zaunbauer H + S Zauntechnik invited local designers and architects to an ideas competition on innovative and interesting fence design. The extraordinary results of this “Design to Business” project will be presented in the course of Designmonat Graz.

It is a fact that fences work. Above everything there is the limiting and protecting function of fences, which is also more important than aesthetics. Form follows function – thus, ensembles of lattices, meshes and slats dominate our environment. Fences are sort of the last white spot on the creative map. Nowadays, the architecture of fencing is rather plain and unspectacular.

In cooperation with Creative Industries Styria, the fence construction specialist based in Raaba-Grambach invited local designers and architects to develop new approaches in terms of designing fences. The fence builder’s motives for the design offensive are clear: Due to the positioning within the field of design, the company wants to differentiate in the market and thus have competitive advantages and enjoy increasing popularity.

Exceptional looks and yet a visual protection function – a combination that for example manifests itself in the designs of the Graz-based architect Ernst Giselbrecht. The starting point of his considerations was the concept of a stone wall, as we know it from Mediterranean countries.

The design of the product designer Thomas Feichtner definitely shows dynamic power. Two different metal patterns, offset to each other, are attached to a frame.

The design of the Graz-based design duo Zweithaler is spectacular, too. With their approach, Benjamin and Markus Pernthaler provide a holistic and also future-orientated concept that is based on a modular and individually configurable system.

Based on the different designs, the company wants to develop a program for designing fences, including sales activities and a website.

World Wide Things Collection

Joanneumsviertel | Kalchberggasse, 8010 Graz
Saturday, May 5 to Thursday, May 31 2018

Design from the cities of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network is going on a world tour, not only transporting beautiful objects: it also includes ideas and the individual “spirit” of the respective cities.

WWT_DSC7949

May 5 to 31, 2018
Opening hours:
Mon to Sun: 10.00 – 17.00
Wed: 10.00 – 20.00
Auditorium at Joanneumsviertel, 8010 Graz

The Loop is on Fire!

The network of the UNESCO Cities of Design has been growing fast: by now 31 cities on all five continents have been awarded the prestigious designation. In order to accelerate the exchange between the cities, two of the most active Cities of Design – Graz and Montréal – have mutually developed a format that can be used to display products and does reflect the individuality of each city. Now, in the course of Designmonat Graz, there is the official launch of the project entitled World Wide Things. The first of these worldwide “things” from Graz and Montréal will be shown at the Auditorium of Joanneusmviertel in an extraordinary way: like a “Hot Wheels Highway” – or a Maerklin train rack – the products compete in a race on a course especially developed for WWT. And just like when playing with toy highway and train facilities, it is possible to design different courses and every highway looks different – just like every city, in which the World Wide Things will be subsequently shown, decides to design it.

WWT-Sujet_DM2018_1000x440Not only the “layout” of the courses change, but also the objects themselves are different. Still, they all have something in common: they must show an authentic and unique design language and need to be created or produced in one of the Cities of Design. Hence, classic “souvenirs”, that we all are familiar with, can stay at home – they are banned from travelling abroad! Anything that wants to go on a journey around the world must prove its independence and character, just like all of the about 40 World Wide Things that were selected strictly according to these criteria.

Still, the concept goes a step further: in a later project phase, all products will also be shown on the homepage of the Design Cities (www.designcities.net), of course with links to manufacturers and suppliers, and in the third stage of the design Hyperloop there will be a marketplace for designers, producers and retailers – in fact, in real life! A place to network, to interchange and above all to buy! After all, it is also the task of the UNESCO Network of Creative Cities to create economic added value and promote sales of the products.

Joanneumsviertel, 8010 Graz

For the second time, Universalmuseum Joanneum cooperates with Designmonat Graz and provides space for oversized ropes, which people can freely shape in the courtyard of Joanneumsviertel. Rope.

Ropes are quick helpers, whether short or long, thick or thin, made of hemp, sisal or plastic. Yet, what happens when a rope suddenly becomes so disproportionally large that it almost completely loses its previously known properties and acquires a completely new quality? And what if it is then also placed in an unexpected spatial context?

The installation “Rope” invites you to co-design the immediate environment. Its inventor, Belgian artist Ief Spincemaille, refers to it as an open-design instrument. The added message of Rope is clear and unmistakable: “Do something with me!” There are loads of possibilities: a total of three ropes with a length of 12 meters each were bought for the courtyard of Joanneumsviertel. Thus, the Graz edition of Rope is a little bit smaller than the original one, which is 65 meters long, 30 cm thick and weighs 196 kg. The enormous rope was made in Leuven (Belgium) prison, where it was knotted by five inmates using a braiding machine developed by Spincemaille. The users within Designmonat Graz enjoy more freedom – actually creative freedom: Rope invites you to interact, communicate and create, to relax, design and try things out.

Therefore, the store provides selected brands and unusual accessories: for example, they also present collections of the porcelain manufactory Fuerstenberg. Within Designmonat Graz, Klammert focuses on the collection “The good life”. The collection was designed by the two designer brothers Christian and Michael Sieger; each piece is handmade and consists of the finest porcelain, partially gold plated.

Since autumn 2017, Wuhan has been the fourth Chinese city to be part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. But unlike Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, Wuhan is far less known in our countries. The 10-million metropolis not only has more inhabitants than the whole of Austria, but is also a leader in engineering design and urban planning: for example, half of all long-span bridges worldwide were designed by designers from Wuhan. In general, Wuhan’s architecture is captivating and the cityscape is characterized by modern skyscrapers. An exhibition at Joanneumsviertel will provide an insight into Wuhan’s latest work in various design areas.

Urban experiments from eleven European cities con- ceptualized and realized by designers, initiatives, activists, students and residents are open for discus- sion. In an interactive exhibition the possibilities
and challenges of ge ing involved are to be discovered.

Why do we feel comfortable or uncomfortable in a city? What makes it livable?
Do we have the freedom to shape our city?
What makes a city our city?

Human Cities_Challenging the City Scale is a European research project with partners from eleven European cities (Belgrade, Bilbao, Brussels, Cieszyn, Graz, Helsinki, Ljubljana, London, Milan, Saint-Étienne, Tallinn). The Human Citizens face these questions collaboratively and meet to develop ideas and solutions
for a be er quality of life in urban areas.

The exhibition SHAPING HUMAN CITIES was designed by students of the Master‘s programme Exhibition Design at the University of Applied Sciences,
FH JOANNEUM. From May 5 to June 24, 2018 urban experiments are presented, which took place within the framework of the Human Cities Project in these cities. Interactive stations where the experiments can be experienced in a playful way are installed in the GrazMuseum.

One of them is LET’S TAKE ACTION! It gives tips on how to become active in your own urban environment and thereby improve the urban space.

WANNA PLAY? Consists of eleven miniature golf courses that invite you to play. Each lane is assigned to one Human City and one of their experiments. The courses incorporate the spatial and creative circumstances of the experiments and pose a challenge for the players.

WANNA TASTE? Invites up to 20 guests on four sundays to taste the Human Cities projects in eleven courses.

Schloss Hollenegg for Design
Less than an hour from Graz, in the Styrian countryside, a fairytale castle is being turned into a design laboratory. Schloß Hollenegg for Design is a non profit cultural project founded in 2015 by Alice Stori Liechtenstein. Aim of the project is to support both established and emerging designers as well as design culture. Schloß Hollenegg for Design offers the first and only residency program in Austria specifically aimed at designers, as well as organising exhibitions, workshops and symposia cantered around design.

The first mention of Hollenegg dates back to 1163, and the long history of the Schloss Hollenegg is visible in its architecture, as successive owners added to the original medieval construction over the centuries. Of particular beauty is the Renaissance courtyard, modelled on the Landhaus in Graz and probably designed by the same architect, Domenico dell’Aglio, in the 16th century. In the second courtyard the Baroque church is still used to this day by the local community.

SELECTED 2018 – OUT OF THE FRAME presents contemporary international interior and product design at Neue Galerie Graz. The design exhibition is implemented into the present show showing a variety of portraits of more than two centuries.

„It is a great pleasure to design an exhibition within an exhibition and thus create a temporary symbiosis“, states curator Alexa Holzer. „Out of the Frame“ is a short term resident at Neue Galerie Graz. Staging a new selection of present furniture and product design during the design festival Designmonat Graz the show opens up a dialogue between art and design. 80 pieces of interior and product design will face portraits of 200 years in this special set-up.

SELECTED 2018 assembles yet again designers from seventeen nations worldwide showing independent works and such commissioned for renowned design labels. Apart from unusual creations manufactured of wood and ceramics the visitor encounters objects made of glas fibre and organic materials. Introducing amorphous forms, decomposing geometric structures and raw and simple shapes, the show focuses on current innovative pieces of the design industry.

Alexa Holzer on the creative concept of SELECTED: „Design showcases change and the evolution of societies. Design is usability translated into form, shaping the stylistics of its time. An object turns unique through the mindful combination of material, colour, form and function.“

Hence the chosen works are no more than two years old. They have already been introduced to the market, being internationally awarded product studies, prototypes and innovative concepts.
SELECTED 2018 is the largest exhibition of contemporary interior and product design in Austria supported by Creative Industries Styria and commissioned for the design festival Designmonat in Graz, Austria.

Other Story, Other Television
In this lecture Luis Fernandes will discuss some of his projects to explore and understand how collaborations, partnerships and international networks to empower a new generation of creators work. He will also present “180 Creative Camp” as an opportunity to pose questions, promote discussions, understand the challenges, opportunities, conflicts and ambiguities through the perspective of the youth.

Luis Fernandes
Luis Fernandes is the Executive Producer of Canal180 (Cannes Lion, 2012), a media platform with focus on culture and creativity that opens a discussion for a community of creators interested in music, design, video, architecture, photography and digital arts. He is also in charge of 180 Creative Camp (Creative Collaborations in Media Arts) and the Head of Partnerships of Canal180. He co-founded the Oporto Laboratory of Architecture and Design in 2010 and curated Get Set Festival – presenting young creators, celebrating creativity – between 2010 and 2015. Luis Fernandes has a Master Degree in Architecture (Oporto, 2009).

The importance of manufacturing work for the current discourse of urban development and architecture is the focus of the 14th issue of EUROPAN, Europe’s largest competition for innovative urbanism and architecture for young architects and urban planners.
After decades of pushing the industry away from the future vision of our cities, “The Productive City” demands its return as an elementary program of a sustainably mixed urban culture. The scope of this integration ranges from new forms of “intersection” of living and working to mixed industrial districts, whose urban added value results from an innovative culture of synergies between infrastructures, energy cycles, open spaces and applications.

Keynote speeches by EUROPAN 14 jury member Dieter Laepple (cultural and urban researcher, Hamburg) and Claudia Nutz (Management Consultant, former Board of Seestadt Aspern + Liegenschaftsentwicklung ÖBB, Vienna), major city architect from Brussels, give an introduction into the discourse of the productive city. In the course of a podium discussion – “Quartett zur produktive Stadt (“Quartet on the productive city”) – the two experts as well as Bernhard Inninger (Head of the city planning office in Graz) and host Aglaée Degros (head of the Institute of Urban Design, Graz University of Technology) discuss about the current trend of production in the city.

The exhibition EUROPAN 14 – Productive Cities displays all pre-selected and awarded projects of the three Austrian locations Linz, Vienna and Graz. With the area along the Kaerntnerstraße, a suburban transit zone that leads to the city center, the city of Graz has brought in an area of great urban significance.

Tolerance Posters

The travelling exhibition is constantly adding works from designers so it has a large variety of cultures and genders.

Tolerance-posters_1000x650.jpg

April 27 to May 23, 2018
Albrechtgasse, 8010 Graz

How tolerant does design need to be? And what can design contribute to tolerance? The “Tolerance Posters” are original contributions by international designers and do provide extraordinary answers to these questions. The touring exhibition has already been hosted in the USA, as well as in Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Spain and the Netherlands. It was always displayed in public spaces, hence, locations where tolerance is experienced, discussed and questioned. At each station, the number of exhibits is expanded by a local piece: Herms Fritz, artist and graphic designer from Graz, expands the international show for Austria.

“Tolerance” is essential for human’s to embrace. It is the only antidote for the competitive drive that characterizes our species. At this moment in history, there’s a slightly reluctant quality to the word. What we really want it to mean is acceptance and generosity.”
