VJ-contest on the topic ‘Revolution’
Visual artists are asked to hand in concepts for visuals on the topic ‘revolution’. The two best visual artists will get a humble price money and the possibility to show their skills live at a rave. The competition aims at putting the art of visuals in the limelight. Visuals are made by VJs – visual jockeys – in real time by means of video and computer technology and are mainly used for concerts and parties.

The organising team of ‘Indivisual’ is made of students of the school HLW Schroedinger, who are currently completing an education to become event managers. With the topic ‘revolution’ they want, amongst others, to refer to global political issues.

Innovative sound design – new tones and unexpected music experiences
The visitors of this year’s V:NM Festival can expect 35 concerts on four days. The festival, which intentionally is not curated, offers a stage to new tones, as only compositions will be performed that have not been published yet.

Also this year, the audience can get involved with unexpected music experiences at three different event locations, namely Forum Stadtpark, ESC-Medienkunst Labor and Cafe Stockwerk,. In doing so, the visitors can expect new approaches to jazz and classical music as well as electronic and experimental music. The festival’s aim is to spread new music and to enable a cultural exchange. Amongst others, there are ensembles performing that actually emerged from such a cultural dialogue, the festival ‘ALPENGLOW – Styria meets Trondheim’ in summer 2016.
Parallel to the festival, in cooperation with the cultural collective Rhizom, there is the exhibition ‘Exiles on Mainstream – Steirische Labels im Bereich neuer und nichtzuordenbarer Musiken (Styrian labels in the field of new and non-assignable music styles)’. The finale of the festival is the big improvisation orchestra on the last day of the event.

19.00: Presentation of the workshop results followed by a discussion with the title „In the air we are all united“ – Design interactions between public, city and nature“

Design the climate and the weather yourself – with Breathe Earth Collective and Clara Robledo.
In the course of the open workshop, 20 participates get the opportunity to design the climate and the weather in miniature by creating ‘Micro Mundos’, hence little worlds, in terrariums. Those Micro Mundos should help retrace macro topics on a small-scale base and understand global climate issues better. By learning how the balance between plants and the air-water-cycle in the terrariums works on a small scale, the environmental awareness of the participants should be increased.

The workshop is supported by Austrian ‘Breathe Earth Collective’, that aims at creating ‘Breathing Spaces’ in cities with a high level of air pollution, and Columbian anthropologian, gardener and botany expert Clara Robledo. Together with her studio ‘La Savia’, Robledo has been working on this design project, that is now the base for the workshop, for some years. The goal is to give people an idea of the nutrients provided by nature.

With the help of the project they also want to create a link between the cities of Graz and Medellín, the home town of Robledo. In Latin America, Medellín counts among the cities with the highest air pollution

DIGITAL REVOLUTION – how the ‘new channels’ change our visual communication.
Just as letterpress destroyed monopoles and introduced democratization, now the digital revolution does change our life. Production tools for everybody and the end of editorship provide ‘too much information’ for an overstrained generation. Research becomes a luxury, which is the breeding ground for fake news and alternative realities. Will we be able to find audio-visual answers or do we degenerate into consumers of marketing-driven stories of new monopolists? Which impact does this change have on designers? Which skills will be needed in the future?

Parallel to the VN:11 Festival, in cooperation with the arts collective Rhizom, there is the exhibition ‘Exiles on Mainstream – Styrian labels in terms of new and not to be categorized music’. What makes this exhibition special is the fact that the content is successively and collectively developed by all labels. Amongst others, there are labels such as chmafu nocords, GOD records, Rock is Hell records, Interstellar records, epilepticmedia and Numavi Records participating.

The single labels with all their similarities and differences present themselves – not mainstream at all – by portraying their current status through an installation of videos, posters and projections. At Listening Sessions, the labels present extracts of their productions. Furthermore, within the format ‘Statement & Discourse’, people take a critical look at the production and work conditions regarding independent music productions in the city and at the countryside.

GEBA: The carpet collection ‘Graz’

Teppichgalerie Geba, Hans-Sachs-Gasse 3, 8010 Graz

Together with the designer Klaus Kempenaars, Harald Geba designed and implemented a collection for carpets – of best Fair Trade quality.

Opening:
22th May 2017 | 19.00
Duration: 23th May to 3rd June 2017 | Mon to Fri, 10.00 – 18.00 | Saturday | 10.00 – 17.00
Location: Teppichgalerie Geba | Hans-Sachs-Gasse 3, 8010 Graz

‘Design meets Tradition’ is once more the motto of GEBA, the Graz-based carpet gallery
30 years ago Harald Geba opened his carpet showroom in the middle of the old city center of Graz, which is now portrayed in an own carpet collection. Together with New York-based designer Klaus Kempenaars, Harald Geba designed and implemented a collection of rugs – of course of mere fair-trade quality – on the topic ‘Graz’.

Designing the carpets, they did combine architectural elements of buildings such as the Murinsel, Kunsthaus, Messe Halle Graz, Lichtschwert, as well as buildings on the main square and other elements like parts of a chain armor or a traditional costume. Furthermore, they incorporated works of composers related to Graz and elements of the heliocentric system of Johannes Kepler.

The Graz Collection unites timeless design and traditional craftsmanship as well as prime knotting skills. Tibetan highland wool is processed by hand right from the shearing to the knotting in two Nepal-based workshops. Additionally, there are natural materials used, such as Chinses silk or linen.

PABUKU – how do you start a greeting card label
‘PABUKU The Queer Paperie’ is celebrating its birthday: Two years ago the by now awarded greeting card label was founded by Ute Baurecker und Ulla Klopf. Due to this anniversary, PABUKU invites graphics- and design-conscious people to have an insight into the development process and buildup of the label on 19th May.

PABUKU offers a broad range of greeting cards which show designs far away from classical, heteronormative stereotypes. Hence, also – and especially – members of the LGBTIQ-Community can find something at PABUKU, if they are looking for appealing greeting cards for their beloved ones.
When designing the cards, graficdesigner Klopf and artist Baurecker aspire to quality, attention to detail and storytelling in terms of graphics.

They also point out that external support and good contacts are a crucial factor for their success: representative for their partners, they present the paper factory Fedrigoni and the printing company ‘1adruck – verrueckt nach Ideen’.

Within Designmonat Graz 2017, five Austrian designers were invited by Creative Industries Styria and Holzcluster Steiermark to develop – in cooperation with five Styrian wood building companies – prototypes of smart urban furniture made of the raw material wood.

Due to the proportionality and the sculptural gesture, the object significantly stands out from the urban landscape. The design is based on a constructive principle: the solid wood board is spatially positioned and secured through round bars which are inserted in a non-parallel way. Due to densifying and thinning down the bars, the design determines the relationship between the interior and the exterior space.

Smart Services – Smart Future
Our working spaces do severely change due to universal digitalization and interlinking. For the individual working environments of single employees this means increasing complexity, required flexibility and more often personal overload. Occasionally, the professional daily routine can just be mastered with the help of further complex technical assistance systems.

How can smart services support people in the smart production of the future? And what if there is no smart service available? In the course of a workshop called ‘Smart Services for Smart Production-Hands-On’ with Hannes Walter of the company Evolaris before the Smartness Conference, those questions were historically contextualized and the participants – by means of Microsoft Hololens, Google Glass and so more – got the opportunity to visualise the smart services of the smart production of the future.

In the course of a discussion round on the opening day on, economic entrepreneurs and company owners will get the chance to speak about where they get their inspiration. In the following days there were books and magazines on the topic of design and creativity available for visitors. Beanbags and loungers invited you to stay. By means of an installation in the roofed entrance area, look! design presented experiences, ideas and suggestions on how to foster ‘unplug & reload’ in everyday working life.

The visitors were also asked to provide inputs on the topics of inspiration and digital timeout. Those were collected on an inspiration wall on-site and online under the hashtags #unplugreload and #murinselgraz.

Interacting in public space – on Jakoministrasse.
To counteract social isolation and foster interaction – this is the aim of the installation ‘Vitrine Intercommunication’ on Jakoministrasse, where the virtual and the real world merge. By means of a KinectSensor pedestrians are scanned and become part of the installation, which is projected to the window of a vacant shop.

Thus, the vitrine takes on the function of a display for the virtual space, in which observers finally discover themselves: at first the window is dark and when someone passes by it blinks. If you stop, the colors and projections change and by moving you can have an influence on the installation.

The project is implemented by artist Anahi Meyer of SomeDesigners and is supported by the organization ‘Jakominiviertel’. From 16th to 28th May the installation is active on Jakoministrasse and invites you to interact in public space.

Whereas analog techniques do no longer pay off economically for mass production, they boom in niches and artistic areas. Everybody, who would like to have a try in a print shop and composing room of the analog times instead of making use of digital creative options, has the possibility to do so within Designmonat Graz. The book printer Bauer opens the doors and the association DruckZeug offers three workshops in which interested guests can try out analog techniques.

In this workshop with Ana Radulovic, participants can typeset and design wooden typefaces and produce large-size prints on historic printing machines.
All is hand-made and that is what makes those prints special. They are unique, there are no digital templates and after the printing, the set is also taken off, which means that a post-production is just possible with the same effort as done for the original copy.

From the very beginning of the conception, the participants do already deal with analog questions such as for example which font size would perfectly match the selected paper format. They are attended and supported throughout the entire process of typesetting and printing.

At the end of the workshop, each participant should be able to take one large-size print (and various copies of it) home.

‘Turning, tipping, stapling, piling, parking, reflecting’ – a modular and manifold piece of wooden furniture for constantly changing urban spaces. The module can be used and combined differently by tipping, turning and stapling. It is possible to generate communication sites and meeting points as well as covered rooms of retreat and recreation or playgrounds and bike-parking facilities.

Within Designmonat Graz 2017, five Austrian designers were invited by Creative Industries Styria and Holzcluster Steiermark to develop – in cooperation with five Styrian wood building companies – prototypes of smart urban furniture made of the raw material wood.

The installation generates space in which you can shortly sit down and retreat, make a break – all by yourself, in twos or perhaps in a threesome. The formal design of the installation is a topic that Thomas Feichtner has already picked up in many projects and that is reinterpreted in terms of this smart piece of urban furniture. Regarding shape, these stools consist of two hexagons that are oppositely displaced – an interplay of surfaces, lines, and edges. An autonomous formal approach of high recognition value.

The “Grazer Hocker” by Thomas Feichtner Studio is available at Tischlerei Wolfgang Rosenkranz (350 Euros).

Design Battle

Josef Prödl Tischlerei, Kirchberg an der Raab 171, 8324 Kirchberg an der Raab
Thursday 11th May 2017 / 17:00

At the Design Battle teams of designers and professionals get together to mutually work on a task around the topic ‘wood’.

11th May 2017
Location: Tischlerei Josef Prödl | 8328 Kirchberg/Raab 171

Experience design close up, participate actively, and evaluate unsparingly – all that was guaranteed within the second Design Battle at Tischlerei Josef Proedl – paired with fine cuisine and a lot of fun.

What does actually happen when designers and experts from other disciplines encounter and mutually work on a task concerning the topic ‘wood’. To get to the bottom of that matter was the aim of Design Battle which was staged at Tischlerei Josef Proedl at Kirchberg an der Raab on 11th May.

Four teams of two professionals each were participating in the event and they got informed about their assignment only 24 hours beforehand. Then the countdown started and the following day from 5 pm on, all the drafts, sketches, thoughts, ideas and everything important were presented to the audience at Tischlerei Josef Proedl. There was immediate and direct feedback from the audience and a jury of experts. The teams accepted it and included it in the redesigns of their concepts.

In the end there were four products that do not only show a high quality of design but the prerequisite to be manufactured. Tischlerei Proedl – being the place where the concepts of the ‘mixed design doubles’ took shape on the very same evening – takes care of this. ‘Our carpenters are assisting the designers with their know-how and their skills in terms of materials”, says host Josef Proedl.

The assignment
What did we expect? It is actually quite simple – as we all know it, have it, use it. Colored, black, white or natural colored. Tremendously multifaceted regarding its kind. Having been designed many times, it still constantly takes on new shape. It does a good job and always is at the right place at the right time. It is aware of its function and still can be so much more – for, it is many times also used as a seat. The number of its feet is of no importance. No angle is unknown, no space too little, no location too refined. It might be a Monobloc, or have just one leg – still, it mostly stands alone. It does stand firmly and securely on the ground and does not need anything on its side as it IS on your side. It is simply a good friend and it is there for you when you need it. It adapts and can be combined. It is the master and can blend it. It might be round, rectangular or even both – a box, a tray with feet or just a board on stones. However – it wants to be reinvented once more. The good old side table. Made of wood.

The teams
– Team 1: Gernot Ritter (HOFRICHTER-RITTER Architekten) & Eva Burtscher (Eva Elias Design/Securo Zaunbau)
– Team 2: Tobias Kestel (White Elephant Studio) & Daniela Müller (Die Steirerin/Business Monat, Editor-in-chief)

Haus der Architektur Graz presents an exhibition on the topic of architecture in the education sector.
Within the past years, numerous buildings for educational institutions have been constructed, rebuilt or supplemented through annexes. The exhibition ‘Wenn gute Schulen Schule machen – Bildungsbau als Zukunftsinvestition (When good schools set a precedent – Buildings for educational institutions as an investment into the future) displays the development of the architectural concepts behind those projects. Simultaneously, they are compared to the developments of the 1960s and 1970s.

Haus der Architektur Graz, in cooperation with Gebaeude- und Baumanagement Graz GmbH and Stadtbaudirektion of the City of Graz, invites interested people to take a look at the development process of the projects.

The expansion of the various buildings for educational institutions within the past years was caused, amongst others, by the increase in population in Graz. Preparing for the building program, the architects were selected via competitions and they created architecture that can stand comparison with any international building.

In the course of the exhibition, which opens on 11th May, there are parallel events and discussions. From 12th May to 11th June interested guests can gain insight into the design processes of the new buildings and converted pieces of architecture at HdA at Mariahilferstrasse 2.

Schloss Hollenegg for Design – Morphosis

Friday 05th May 2017 - Monday, 08. May 2017

20 young designers deal with the topic Morphosis and show their relevant works at Schloss Hollenegg.

Exhibition
5th to 8th May 2017
Location: Schloss Hollenegg for Design, 8530 Hollenegg 1

To hold on to change – Design exhibition at Schloss Hollenegg.
20 young designers dealt with the topic Morphosis and showed their relevant works at Schloss Hollenegg. Morphosis can be defined as the constant process of modification, the change that everything is subject to – from the organisms, inanimate objects, habits to even cultures. The exhibition displays how these modifications take place and how design can have an influence on Morphosis.

Based on this key idea, in the summer of 2016 two designers worked as ‘Designers in Residence’ for one week each at Schloss Hollenegg and let themselves be inspired by the environment and the history of the castle. Further 18 designers were invited in the fall of 2016 to also deal with the issue of Morphosis and to submit works for the exposition.

The main venue for the event was be the ceremonial hall of Schloss Hollenegg, whose history dates back to the 12th century. Founded by Alice Stori Liechtenstein, the project ‘Schloss Hollenegg for Design’ is a cultural association that supports young, aspiring designers.

Location: KAPO Fenster und Türen | Münzgrabenstraße 89, 8010 Graz

Design Pieces of Neue Wiener Werkstaette: For more than 10 years the Styrian furniture manufacturer ‘Neue Wiener Werkstaette’ (NWW) has collaborated with Austrian designer Thomas Feichtner. As a result, there are several common products and projects which are fabulous examples of the cooperation between a producing company and a creative professional.

One of those products is FX10 Lounge chair. It already received many international awards and was included in the collections of MAK Wien and Hofmobiliendepot Wien. In the course of Designmonat 2017, Neue Wiener Werkstaette shows FX10 in Graz: its sharp-edged design impresses at first sight and only by sitting down, the furniture exposes its high level of comfort. The even surfaces form a closed shape that is sustained by the dynamic tension of a geometrical body that has become a kind of ‘sitting art’.

Moving design at your feet
Apart from their function as a historically grown element of design, in many cultures carpets do have a further function: they serve as a medium and even as a historical source, because very often carpets tell stories – and by far not just from the past. One of these modern stories is told by the Valerija Ilcuka’s carpet, in her case it is actually her own story. The graduate of Graphic Design designed and produced this particular biographic carpet in the course of her thesis at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. It reflects her moving, multi-cultural way of life, from her early childhood until today. It can also be seen at the shop of Gebhart Blazek.

Célia Picard and Hannes Schreckensberger deal with their furniture collection Superfurniture in an experimental manner with current questions about living. With this collection they want to satisfy contemporary living needs and allow new ways of life. The work is based on an investigation of the DIY movement of the 1960s and 1970s in the USA as well as works by the Italian architect and artist Enzo Mari.

12th May | 16.30
1st June | 17.00
10th June | 13.00

The Orange Age – an exhibition on media design of the 70s reviews a dynamic and highly creative era of the 20th century by showcasing selected objects and exhibits. Audio and TV devices, communication devices and office machines show how close (a lot of things still look familiar) and at the same time far (the analogue mode has disappeared once and for all) this period that was significant for the development of media as well as deign appears. The 1970s are – as the persistent retro trend suggests – as popular as no other decade.
All objects come from the private archive of Heinz M Fischer, who is in possesion of one of the most comprehensive historical media collections in Austria.

The exhibition is a cooperation with the Department of Media & Design of FH Joanneum. While at designforum Steiermark the exhibition deals with the communication tools of the past, speakers give a glimpse into the future of communication and media in the course of FH Joanneum Lecture Days. Presentation areas for the exhibits of ‘The Orange Age’ are provided by the carpentry of Josef Proedl, namely the HUBs, office furniture designed and made by Fantoni in Italy. The exhibition will be displayed in the following months at several locations, inter alia designforum Wien (Vienna) and designforum Vorarlberg.

Smart urban furniture of wood for digital natives and digital immigrants.
The aim of Smart Urban Privacy is to create a private retreat in urban space. CIS and Holzcluster Steiermark invited five Austrian designers to cooperate with five Styrian carpenters or wood manufacturing companies and to develop innovative urban furniture for Designmonat Graz.

The five prototypes that are developed in the course of the project, provide a temporary retreat at lively, public locations. Thus, the users are not completely cut off their environment, as they are still able to perceive the world outside. The main material is wood.

The smart furniture prototypes were created for digital natives, so to say people who were already born into the digital world, and also digital immigrants – those who got to know this world only as adults. Within Designmonat Graz 2017, they offer a retreat in public space at different locations of the inner city of Graz.

Location: Joanneumsviertel Graz

Different approaches to the topic light in public space
Eight projects and installations in public space open up new perspectives – beyond the ordinary perception – in terms of lighting. Among others, at Joanneumsviertel, the artistic group Plex Noir created an audiovisual installation that results from the interplay of moving pictures and laser projections.

Also the Murinsel is going to shine in the course of Klanglicht: During the Klanglicht weekend, from the Murinsel and downstream to Hauptbruecke, a laser light wave, designed by the visual artists of OchoReSotto, is going to provide an exceptional visual experience of the river Mur.

The design of the installation is created in an interactive way by the observers: they are invited to influence the composition of the dynamic façade installation via their smartphones. Individually or in groups they can dynamically draw, play, dance and compose. It is based on the idea of making the mobile phone technology, that in principle cannot be seen, visible – in an esthetically attractive way.

The opening of ‘Licht 2017’ takes place on 21st April from 20 h – interested people can look at the real-time-study of Plex Noir until 21st May 2017. The other installations and projects are to be found in the entire city center within Designmonat Graz.
