Whereas analog techniques do no longer pay off economically for mass production, they boom in niches and artistic areas. Everybody, who would like to have a try in a print shop and composing room of the analog times instead of making use of digital creative options, has the possibility to do so within Designmonat Graz. The book printer Bauer opens the doors and the association DruckZeug offers three workshops in which interested guests can try out analog techniques.

Within this workshop with Thomas Maier the focus lies on the manual typesetting of a small print format, like a postcard. When working with lead type, the design parameters are subject to stringent criteria – precision is a must.
The participants can print the designed postcards on high-quality paper with a high grammage themselves.

At the end of the workshop, each participant should hold a set of self-designed postcards in her/ his hand.

For really perfectly typeset printing blocks, there will be the possibility to produce them in high-grade embossed printing (Letterpress) on a Heidelberger Tiegel.

This workshop with Anja Schwendenwein and Anna Weninger is addressed to people interested in crafts. This year, they present visible thread stitching that are suitable for advanced learners – with a lot of possible variations, complementary to the coptic stitch binding – but also for beginners.

A conceptual and systematic approach is the base of both, design and manual work. Hence, the participants are asked to design their own book with the help of the demonstrated technique and professional support of the book binders. An analog tool as a contrast to the fast moving nature of the digital world – a long-term storage of data, ideas, and knowledge. Smart Design – Handmade Production.

At the end of the workshop, each participant should be able to hold an appealing and functional book in her/ his hands.

In this workshop with Ana Radulovic, participants can typeset and design wooden typefaces and produce large-size prints on historic printing machines.
All is hand-made and that is what makes those prints special. They are unique, there are no digital templates and after the printing, the set is also taken off, which means that a post-production is just possible with the same effort as done for the original copy.

From the very beginning of the conception, the participants do already deal with analog questions such as for example which font size would perfectly match the selected paper format. They are attended and supported throughout the entire process of typesetting and printing.

At the end of the workshop, each participant should be able to take one large-size print (and various copies of it) home.

Staging the City
In a time of increasing polarization and digitalization, there is a growing desire for interpersonal interaction. This workshop focuses on the Fischplatz, which most people know by the name of Andreas-Hofer-Platz. This place has a unique positioning within the city. There are six streets that cross at the location that original was not planned to be a square. Only after the Carmelite convent, that had been there since 1643, was demolished in 1934, they created an empty lot that was not developed anymore. Finally, the location was used as a major bus terminal for many decades and today, Andreas-Hofer-Platz is a ‘non-space’.

The workshop is a cooperation of Creative Industries Styria with xSITE. The aim is to apply a new meaning to the square in the middle of Graz and to make it a place of relaxation and interaction – an outdoor living room for all people of Graz.
xSITE is a constantly developing platform for visual communication. The workshop is hosted by Ingeborg Bloem, Stefan Hengst and Klaus Kempenaars.

Smart Services – Smart Future
Our working spaces do severely change due to universal digitalization and interlinking. For the individual working environments of single employees this means increasing complexity, required flexibility and more often personal overload. Occasionally, the professional daily routine can just be mastered with the help of further complex technical assistance systems.

How can smart services support people in the smart production of the future? And what if there is no smart service available? In the course of a workshop called ‘Smart Services for Smart Production-Hands-On’ with Hannes Walter of the company Evolaris, those questions are historically contextualized and the participants – by means of Microsoft Hololens, Google Glass and so more – get the opportunity to visualize the smart services of the smart production of the future.

PABUKU – how do you start a greeting card label
‘PABUKU The Queer Paperie’ is celebrating its birthday: Two years ago the by now awarded greeting card label was founded by Ute Baurecker und Ulla Klopf. Due to this anniversary, PABUKU invites graphics- and design-conscious people to have an insight into the development process and buildup of the label on 19th May.

PABUKU offers a broad range of greeting cards which show designs far away from classical, heteronormative stereotypes. Hence, also – and especially – members of the LGBTIQ-Community can find something at PABUKU, if they are looking for appealing greeting cards for their beloved ones.
When designing the cards, graficdesigner Klopf and artist Baurecker aspire to quality, attention to detail and storytelling in terms of graphics.

They also point out that external support and good contacts are a crucial factor for their success: representative for their partners, they present the paper factory Fedrigoni and the printing company ‘1adruck – verrueckt nach Ideen’.

Interested people can pass by on 19th May in the open-air area of Capperi at Mariahilferstrasse 12 from ca. 15.00-18.00 – the event takes place in the ‘Salettl’. Location: OPEN.LAB Reininghaus
The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 20 people.
Registration until 21th May: contact[at]breatheearth.net

19.00: Presentation of the workshop results followed by a discussion with the title „In the air we are all united“ – Design interactions between public, city and nature“

Design the climate and the weather yourself – with Breathe Earth Collective and Clara Robledo.
In the course of the open workshop, 20 participates get the opportunity to design the climate and the weather in miniature by creating ‘Micro Mundos’, hence little worlds, in terrariums. Those Micro Mundos should help retrace macro topics on a small-scale base and understand global climate issues better. By learning how the balance between plants and the air-water-cycle in the terrariums works on a small scale, the environmental awareness of the participants should be increased.

The workshop is supported by Austrian ‘Breathe Earth Collective’, that aims at creating ‘Breathing Spaces’ in cities with a high level of air pollution, and Columbian anthropologian, gardener and botany expert Clara Robledo. Together with her studio ‘La Savia’, Robledo has been working on this design project, that is now the base for the workshop, for some years. The goal is to give people an idea of the nutrients provided by nature.

With the help of the project they also want to create a link between the cities of Graz and Medellín, the home town of Robledo. In Latin America, Medellín counts among the cities with the highest air pollution
